Irish Coffee at Home (Better Than a Bar): Ratios, Coffee Choice, Cream Tricks
Updated: March 15, 2026
Make Irish Coffee that tastes rich and balanced (not watery or overly sweet). The technique is easy once you know the ratios.
Fun fact
The “wow” factor is mostly the cream: lightly whipped so it floats, not fully whipped like frosting.
The simple ratio (works every time)
- 1.5–2 oz Irish whiskey
- 4–6 oz hot coffee
- 1–2 tsp brown sugar (to help the cream float)
- Lightly whipped cream on top
Coffee choice matters (don’t use weak coffee)
Irish Coffee gets watery fast if the coffee is weak. Use a medium-dark roast and brew a little stronger than normal.
Cream tricks (the part most people mess up)
- Whip until thickened but still pourable (soft peaks).
- Pour over the back of a spoon so it floats.
- Use brown sugar in the coffee—helpful for float + flavor.

FAQ
FAQ
Can I make it without cream?
Yes—still tasty. But cream is what makes it feel like Irish Coffee instead of “whiskey in coffee.”
What whiskey should I use?
Use an Irish whiskey you like. Smooth and not too smoky works best.
