Martini Guide: Gin vs Vodka, Dry vs Dirty, and Ratios That Work
Updated: February 1, 2026
A simple framework so you order/make a Martini you actually enjoy.
Fun fact
Vermouth is wine—once opened it goes stale. Fresh vermouth is the difference between “wow” and “meh.”
Choose your vibe
- Gin = botanical and aromatic
- Vodka = clean and neutral
- Dirty = savory (olive brine)
- Dry = less vermouth
A starting ratio
Try 5:1 spirit:vermouth. Adjust drier from there. Overly-dry martinis are common because many bars use old vermouth.
Technique that matters
- Stir (don’t shake) for a clear silky martini
- Chill your glass
- Use big cold ice for controlled dilution
Recommended glassware & tools
Recommended
- Coupe is usually sturdier than V-shaped martini glasses.
- For stirred drinks.
